The Design Probe

The project probes into voters actions and reactions with digital  and non-digital artefacts to uncover their latent preferences by asking the question, “How might we understand and uncover factors influencing preferences of people during opinion polls?

It sets the stage for employing design probes, a human-centered design “approach for understanding human phenomenon and exploring design opportunities”, says Tuuli Mattelmaki in the book Design Pro Best. Probes are also designed to incorporate the “users” context and perception in order to enrich the design. In this case the opinion polls were looked at as the known-unknowns human phenomenon, which opened the window to identifying the difference between voter’s stated preference and their revealed preferences contradicting yet justifying their voting behaviour.

There could be several factors such as; religion, caste, class, relative economic gains, community solidarity, family and friends and political/party afflictions affecting their choices, but the question is, will people still stick to their choices of the candidates behind the privacy of the polling booths?
