Overview

designing props and creating a space where the movement and interactions happens as the participants follow through the narration. This experiment engages all the senses of the participants. They had to completely immerse and interact with the surroundings.

Some of the Aims of this experiment was to answer the following questions.

  • How does the perception of these objects change when certain senses are heightened and the focus is in the moment?

  • What were the experiences of the participants in understanding that action can happen without the constant chatter of the mind?

  • What are their perceptions depended upon and which sense organ did they rely on the most during the activity?

  • What are the different conversations that emerge out of this exercise and how will that inform my study?

  • Which sense organ to pick-up in order to make the wearable device for my capstone (Thesis)?

When dealing with bodily processes, traditional forms of doing research become limiting. The body and its multifaceted roles in perception goes beyond mere visuals. To capture the essence of these roles, an immersive storytelling tool was designed as part of a Self-Directed Inquiry. It comes within the ambit of  research-through-design approach. In this context, the designed experiment acts as a tool to conduct primary research.

The experiment designed was a based on a story, the Brahmin's dream, which was selected from an Indian fable called Panchatantra. In this story, a brahmin (priest) goes around town asking for alms and collecting rice, at the end of the day he gets a surplus of the rice than what he needs for the day. He comes back home with dreamy eyes and let's his thoughts run on a wild goose chase and builds castles in the air. This very idea and act of building castles in the air is brought to life through physical and interactive immersive storytelling.

The story was retold with the help of an immersive narrative using voice overs, background elemental sounds,
